Understanding your results
TDS amount is what the payer must deduct and deposit with the government before releasing payment. Net payment after TDS is what the recipient actually receives — the recipient can typically claim credit for this deducted amount against their final tax liability when filing their return.
The formula
TDS = Payment amount × Applicable section rateEach payment category is assigned a standard rate under its Income Tax Act section — professional/technical fees under Section 194J, contractor payments under 194C, and so on. The calculator simply applies the selected section's standard rate to the gross payment amount to find the deduction.
A worked example
A ₹1,00,000 professional fee payment under Section 194J at 10% has a TDS of ₹10,000, leaving a net payment of ₹90,000 to the recipient — who can claim the ₹10,000 as tax already paid when filing their income tax return.
Notes for the UK, US and India
TDS rates and thresholds can change with each Union Budget, and some categories have a minimum threshold below which no TDS applies (e.g. Section 194C generally doesn't apply below certain single-payment or aggregate-annual thresholds) — this calculator applies the flat rate directly and doesn't check threshold exemptions, so verify against current CBDT guidance for your specific transaction.
Frequently asked questions
Does TDS apply to every payment, no matter how small?+
No — most TDS sections have a minimum threshold below which no deduction is required. This calculator applies the rate directly without checking thresholds, so confirm your specific section's current threshold before assuming TDS applies.
Can the recipient get the TDS amount back?+
Yes — TDS is treated as tax already paid on the recipient's behalf. They claim credit for it (shown in their Form 26AS) when filing their income tax return, and get a refund if their actual tax liability is lower than the amount deducted.
What if I don't have a PAN?+
TDS is typically deducted at a higher rate (often 20%) if the recipient doesn't provide a valid PAN — well above the standard section rates shown here. Always provide your PAN to avoid this higher deduction.
