How to use this crypto profit/loss calculator

  1. 1Buy price and sell price: per-coin prices, in whichever currency you're tracking.
  2. 2Quantity: how many coins or tokens (fractional amounts are fine).
  3. 3Buy-side and sell-side fees: your exchange's trading fee percentage on each side — check your exchange's fee schedule, since these vary and can meaningfully affect the real result on frequent trades.

Understanding your results

Profit/loss is your real gain or loss after both fees, not just the raw price difference. Cost basis includes the buy fee (what you actually paid to acquire the position), and net sale proceeds subtracts the sell fee (what you actually receive) — the gap between a naive price-difference calculation and this fee-adjusted one can be significant on high-fee exchanges or frequent trading.

The formula

Profit/loss = (Sell price × Quantity × (1 − Sell fee)) − (Buy price × Quantity × (1 + Buy fee))

Cost basis grosses up the purchase amount by the buy fee, since that fee is real money spent to acquire the position. Sale proceeds nets down the sale amount by the sell fee, since that's real money never received. The difference between these two fee-adjusted figures is your true profit or loss — a more accurate number than simply comparing buy and sell prices.

A worked example

Buying 0.5 coins at $30,000 with a 0.5% buy fee costs a cost basis of $15,075 ($15,000 + $75 fee). Selling at $45,000 with a 0.5% sell fee nets $22,387.50 ($22,500 − $112.50 fee). Profit is $7,312.50 — a return of about 48.5% on the fee-adjusted cost basis, slightly less than the roughly 50% price move alone would suggest, purely due to fees on both sides.

Notes for the UK, US and India

This calculator doesn't include tax implications — most jurisdictions treat crypto gains as taxable events, and rules vary significantly by country and holding period (short-term vs. long-term). Keep your own trade records; exchanges don't always report cost basis accurately, especially across multiple platforms or wallets.

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for taxes?+

No — tax treatment of crypto gains varies significantly by country and how long you held the asset. Keep detailed trade records and consult a tax professional familiar with crypto for your specific jurisdiction.

Why does my ROI look lower than the raw price change?+

Fees on both the buy and sell side reduce your real return below the headline price difference — a seemingly small fee percentage can add up meaningfully, especially on frequent or smaller trades.

Can I use this for an unrealized (not-yet-sold) gain?+

Yes — enter the current market price as the 'sell price' to see your position's paper profit or loss as of today, understanding it isn't locked in until you actually sell.
